Effective June 22, 2026, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) introduced a modernized First Aid Program designed to align workplace first aid training in Ontario with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA Z1210:24) standard.
While many of the workplace first aid requirements remain the same, there are important updates that employers should understand to ensure their workers receive compliant training and maintain valid certification.
What’s Changing?
The most noticeable change is the renaming of workplace first aid courses:
| Previous Course Name | New Course Name |
| Emergency First Aid | Basic First Aid |
| Standard First Aid | Intermediate First Aid |
Although the course names have changed, the training requirements for workplaces remain largely unchanged.
Workplaces with 1 to 5 workers per shift must continue to have at least one worker trained in Basic First Aid (formerly Emergency First Aid).
Workplaces with 6 or more workers per shift must continue to have at least one worker trained in Intermediate First Aid (formerly Standard First Aid).
Existing certifications remain valid until their expiry date.

Why First Aid Training Matters
Workplace first aid training is about more than compliance. The skills learned during training can help save lives, reduce the severity of injuries, and improve outcomes while waiting for emergency medical services to arrive.
From responding to cardiac arrest and choking emergencies to treating bleeding, fractures, and other workplace injuries, properly trained employees can make a critical difference when every second counts.
